Math Intervention That Actually Works.

Your child isn't bad at math — they just haven't been taught in a way that makes sense to their brain.

We use a hands-on, mastery-based approach that builds real understanding — not just memorized tricks that fall apart under pressure.

Let's end the math homework battles.

Most math programs assume kids will catch up with more practice, more worksheets, more time. For kids who learn differently, that approach just piles on frustration. They don’t need more of the same. They need instruction designed for how their brain actually processes numbers.

We use Math-U-See — a mastery-based, multisensory math curriculum designed for students who’ve struggled with traditional instruction. Rather than rushing through grade-level material, we place students based on skill and fill every gap before moving on. The Build-Write-Say method turns abstract math into something kids can see, touch, and explain — so the concepts actually stick.

Build the Math Physically

Most kids are taught abstract math — numbers and symbols on a page — before they actually understand what those numbers represent. That’s why they memorize procedures they don’t understand, then forget them a week later.

We start with hands-on, color-coded blocks your child can see, touch, and move. Each block represents a real quantity. When your child stacks 2 tens and 3 ones, they’re not just seeing “23” — they’re holding 23. Abstract becomes concrete.

This is the Concrete stage of the research-backed Concrete-Representational-Abstract framework — proven effective for students with learning differences.

Connect What They Built to Symbols

Once your child can physically construct a math problem, we connect what they just built to the symbols on paper. They see “23” and they know — without guessing — that it means 2 tens and 3 ones, because they just built it.

This is the Representational stage. Your child is bridging the gap between concrete blocks and abstract numbers. They’re no longer memorizing how to “carry the 1” or “borrow from the tens place.” They’re understanding what’s actually happening.

When kids understand rather than memorize, the math stays with them — even under the pressure of a test or a new concept down the road.

Explain It Back — That's Mastery

Once your child has built it and written it, we ask them to explain the “why” out loud. If they can teach it back, they truly own it.

This is where most programs stop short. Schools assess whether a student can get the right answer on a worksheet. We assess whether they can teach the concept back using their own words, blocks, and reasoning.

We don’t move on until your child can explain why, not just how. No gaps, no shaky foundations. We build rock-solid math skills they can carry into every level that follows.

How we're different

Specialists, Not Tutors

A tutor re-teaches school math — just with more attention. If school math hasn’t worked, more school math won’t help. Our coaches are trained in the Math-U-See methodology: a different approach designed specifically for kids who haven’t succeeded with traditional instruction.

We Teach for True Understanding

We use Math-U-See — a research-backed, mastery-based, multisensory curriculum. Our coaches don’t just drill your child on facts. They teach math the way the brain actually learns it: concrete first, then representational, then abstract. Traditional math tutoring will not accomplish this.

Personal Instruction That's Convenient

Your child will develop a relationship with one coach and will exclusively work with them one-on-one, ensuring your child learns at a pace that suits them. Our sessions are via Zoom — no driving, no waiting rooms, no wasted time. We come to you.

Engaging Sessions — Even for Kids with ADHD

Parents sometimes worry that virtual instruction won’t be a good fit for a squirmy kid. Our coaches come with years of experience and design lessons that are engaging for each individual student. Whether a child thrives on movement and games, or needs repetition and patience, our coaches rise to the challenge and come prepared.

No Long-Term Commitments

Some learning centers require 6- or 12-month commitments for their programs. We are so sure of our program, our coaches, and our students’ success, that we pride ourselves on offering month-to-month enrollment. Cancel anytime.

Sound familiar?

Which of these best describes your child's current struggles?

“ My child can do a math problem one day but completely forgets how the next day. Here's why
Here's why: This usually means your child memorized a procedure without ever understanding what it represents. The second something changes — a different number size, a new context — the procedure falls apart. We teach math concretely first. Your child builds it with blocks before they ever see the equation. When a concept is understood rather than memorized, it doesn't disappear.
“ My child still counts on their fingers for basic addition and subtraction. Here's why
Here's why: Counting on fingers means your child never developed fact fluency — strategies for recalling basic facts from memory. This isn't a character flaw; the strategies were never taught. Our AIM (Accelerated Individualized Mastery) programs teach number-relationship strategies that replace finger counting with real, confident fluency.
“ My child freezes on word problems, even when the math itself is easy. Here's why
Here's why: Word problems require two separate skills — reading comprehension and pulling out the math operation. Kids who struggle with one or both are usually given more word problems as "practice," which just deepens the anxiety. We teach word problems by connecting the words to physical representations first, so your child has a clear strategy instead of a blank stare.
“ My child is years behind grade level in math, and the gap keeps growing. Here's why
Here's why: Most school math curricula are spiral — they touch a concept briefly and move on, whether or not your child has mastered it. Gaps stack. By 5th grade, a child missing foundational place-value understanding is going to struggle with fractions. Our program is mastery-based and skill-placed. We start where your child actually is, not where their grade says they should be, and we fill the gaps systematically.
“ My child says "I'm just bad at math" or "my brain doesn't do math." Here's why
Here's why: This is almost always a sign of math anxiety built up from years of not understanding — not an accurate reflection of ability. When we make math make sense at the foundational level, kids rebuild their confidence. The "I'm bad at math" voice gets quieter, session by session, as they experience success with work they actually understand.
“ My child has dyslexia or ADHD, and now math has become a second battle on top of reading. Here's why
Here's why: Math difficulties often overlap with dyslexia and ADHD — research estimates roughly 30–40% of students with dyslexia also struggle with math, and ADHD brings its own math challenges. The same evidence-based principles that work for reading intervention — explicit, multisensory, mastery-based instruction — work for math too. Many of our students do both reading and math with us, on the days and times that fit their family.
Sound familiar? You're not alone. Your smart, creative kid is starting to believe they're “bad at math.” They're not. They just haven't been taught the right way — yet.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from regular math tutoring?
Most tutoring re-teaches math the same way school does, just with more one-on-one attention. That helps some kids, but not the ones whose brains process numbers differently. We use a completely different methodology: mastery-based, multisensory Math-U-See instruction designed specifically for kids who haven't succeeded with traditional instruction. Traditional tutoring will not accomplish this.
What ages do you work with?
We serve students ages 6+. Placement is based on skill level, not grade — we start where your child actually is.
Does my child need a dyscalculia diagnosis to work with you?
No. A formal diagnosis is not required. If your child struggles with math despite adequate instruction and effort, they may benefit from our approach.
Do sessions have to be in person?
All sessions are virtual via Zoom. We use screen sharing and virtual manipulatives so your child gets the full hands-on Build-Write-Say experience from home — no driving, no waiting rooms.
My child has ADHD and I'm concerned they won't last a full 50-minute session.
We totally understand your concerns and want to assure you that we are very used to working with young wiggle worms. While we want to make sure your child gets the most out of every session, we also want them to enjoy the experience and look forward to it. The benefit of one-on-one sessions is that your child will be matched with a coach who really gets to know them. Sometimes we push, sometimes we play. It's all about figuring out what your child needs.
What if my child also has dyslexia?
Many of our math students also have dyslexia — the two often co-occur. We also offer reading intervention using the Barton Reading & Spelling System, and many families do both with us. We can coordinate scheduling so your child's reading and math sessions work seamlessly together.
How long until I see results?
Most families notice a shift in confidence within the first few weeks — your child starts approaching math with less anxiety and more willingness to try. Skill-level mastery depends on starting point, consistency, and frequency of sessions. Your coach will keep you informed on the progress they see.
Do you require a long-term commitment?
No contracts. We work month-to-month. Our goal is to build math skills your child can carry forward — not to lock you into a package.
What if we need to miss a session or take a break?
No worries! While we want to stick to a set schedule, we know that life happens. If you're sick or need to take a vacation, just let us know ahead of time and we'll schedule a makeup session at your earliest convenience. If a longer break is needed, we can pause our services and pick back up when you're ready.
