What Is UFLI Foundations?

Many reading programs assume kids will absorb reading through exposure and practice. For children who learn differently, that approach often leaves gaps. UFLI Foundations takes the opposite path. It teaches the code of English directly, in a clear order, so nothing is left to chance and nothing is left to guessing.

UFLI Foundations is an explicit and systematic phonics program created by the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) and grounded in the Science of Reading. It teaches letter sounds and spelling patterns in a carefully built sequence, moving from simple to complex, so every new skill rests on a solid one underneath it. It was designed for core instruction in the primary grades, kindergarten through second, and it is also used for intervention with struggling readers in any grade, including older students who need to rebuild their foundation.

01Warm Up & Review

Tune the Ear and the Eye

Every UFLI lesson follows the same dependable eight step routine. It opens with four quick warm ups that keep earlier skills sharp before anything new is introduced.

  • Phonemic awareness: hearing and moving the individual sounds in words.
  • Visual drill: seeing a letter and saying its sound.
  • Auditory drill: hearing a sound and writing its letter.
  • Blending drill: pushing sounds together to read whole words.

02New Concept

Teach One New Skill, Clearly

Next, the coach introduces a single new concept, a sound spelling pattern or rule, and models it directly. Your child is never asked to figure it out on their own.

They practice it right away with the coach guiding them, so the skill is understood before they use it independently. Because only one new idea is added at a time, your child is never overwhelmed, and the reason behind each spelling starts to make sense.

03Put It to Work

Read It, Write It, Use It

The final steps move the new skill into real reading and spelling, so it actually transfers to the page.

  • Word work: reading and spelling words that use the new pattern.
  • Irregular words: learning the tricky high frequency words, often called heart words, that do not fully follow the rules.
  • Connected text: reading and writing real sentences and short passages that put it all together.

Here is the part that makes it stick: while each new concept is introduced, the ones before it keep getting practiced. Skills are reviewed again and again until they become automatic.

Why This Program Works

Explicit and Systematic

Nothing is left to chance. Skills are taught directly and in a deliberate order, each one building on the last. Your child is never expected to guess a rule that was never taught.

Built on the Science of Reading

UFLI Foundations was developed by researchers at the University of Florida Literacy Institute and reflects what decades of research tell us about how the brain learns to read.

Constant Cumulative Review

New patterns are introduced while earlier ones keep being practiced. That steady review is a big reason skills move from shaky to automatic and stay there.

Strong for Early Readers and Gap-Fillers

It was designed for early elementary readers, and its clear structure also makes it a powerful tool for older students who need to fill in foundational skills they missed.

Delivered One-on-One, Virtually

Your child works with one dedicated coach over Zoom. The coach adjusts the pace to your child, spending more time where it is needed and moving faster where it is not.

Multisensory and Engaging

Kids see the letters, hear the sounds, say them aloud, and write them. Eyes, ears, voice, and hands all work together, which helps the learning take hold, even for wiggly, busy kids.

Backed by Real Results

This is not a trendy new method. It has been studied at scale, with striking results.

In a 2021-22 University of Florida study led by Dr. Holly Lane, director of the UF Literacy Institute, students taught with UFLI Foundations made gains that an independent literacy researcher called "dramatic," a result that is rare in reading research. The findings were published in Reading Research Quarterly (2025).

Is UFLI the Right Fit for Your Child?

Maybe. Maybe not. That is exactly what our assessment is for.

Here is what sets us apart from a one program tutor: we do not force every child into the same method. UFLI Foundations is a wonderful fit for many students, but for a child with a more significant dyslexia profile, a comprehensive program like Barton may be the better path. Another child might do best with EBLI. The only way to know is to look at your child's specific skills.

Every student who comes to us starts with a reading assessment. We look at where your child is strong, where the gaps are, and how they learn best. Then we recommend the program that fits, and match your child with a coach trained in it.

Comprehensive Dyslexia

Barton Reading & Spelling

Our flagship Orton-Gillingham program. Best for students with dyslexia who need a full, multi-year path from the ground up.

You are here

UFLI Foundations

An explicit, systematic phonics program. Strong for early readers and for older students rebuilding foundational skills.

Flexible Literacy

EBLI

Evidence based literacy instruction that builds reading, spelling, and writing together. Another tool we match to the right student.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you decide whether UFLI is right for my child?
We start every student with a reading assessment. It shows us where your child is strong, where the gaps are, and how they learn. From there we recommend the program that fits, which might be UFLI Foundations, Barton, or another approach. You are never signing up for a program blind. The assessment comes first, then the recommendation.
How is UFLI different from the Barton program?
Both are structured, systematic, and research based. Barton is a comprehensive Orton-Gillingham program built for students with dyslexia, and it is designed as a full multi-year journey. UFLI Foundations is a streamlined phonics program that is excellent for building or repairing foundational reading skills, often on a shorter timeline. Neither one is "better." They fit different children, which is why we assess before we recommend.
Is UFLI a good fit for a child with dyslexia?
It can be. UFLI Foundations is aligned with structured literacy, the approach recommended for students with dyslexia, and the University of Florida Literacy Institute maintains dedicated dyslexia resources. That said, a child with more significant needs may be better served by a comprehensive program like Barton. Our assessment helps us make that call with you rather than guessing.
What ages and grades is UFLI for?
UFLI Foundations was designed for early readers in kindergarten through second grade. Because it is so clear and structured, it also works well as an intervention for older students who never built a solid foundation. We use the assessment to make sure the program and the starting point match your child.
Do you teach UFLI one-on-one and online?
Yes. Like all of our programs, UFLI Foundations is taught one-on-one over Zoom by a dedicated coach. Your child gets full attention, and the coach adjusts the pace to fit them, spending more time where it helps and moving quickly where it does not.
Does my child need a dyslexia diagnosis to start?
No. A formal diagnosis is not required. If your child is struggling with reading or spelling despite real effort, our assessment can help identify what is getting in the way and which program will help most.
How long does UFLI take?
It depends on your child's starting point, the size of the gaps, and how often they attend. UFLI is often a more foundational, shorter path than a full multi-year dyslexia program. During your consultation and after the assessment, we will give you a realistic picture of what to expect for your child.
