Warning Signs of Dyscalculia

Trusted information for families navigating the dyscalculia journey — we’re here to help.

Sound familiar?

If your child struggles with any of these, they may benefit from structured math intervention — and we can help.

  • Spends hours on math homework but can’t retain the concepts from one week to the next
  • Struggles to memorize basic math facts like 7+8 or 6×4, despite endless drilling and flashcards
  • Can solve math problems when shown step-by-step, but can’t figure out which operation to use on their own
  • Still relies on fingers to count, long after their peers have stopped
  • Confuses similar-looking numbers — writes 21 for 12, or 6 for 9
  • Math class feels slow, exhausting, or frustrating — even after years of practice

The technical definition:

“Dyscalculia is a specific learning disability that affects a person’s ability to understand numbers and learn math facts. Individuals with dyscalculia may struggle with number sense, mathematical reasoning, calculation, and mathematical problem-solving.”

– Learning Disabilities Association of America

The functional definition:

Dyscalculia is a rainbow of possibilities of strengths and weaknesses that a person can possess and is typically recognizable by persistent struggles with number sense, math facts, and mathematical reasoning. There are plenty of brilliant people with dyscalculia who struggle with numbers and lead markedly successful lives. Dyscalculia can be difficult to detect because one child’s dyscalculia can look vastly different from another’s depending on their unique strengths and weaknesses and their frequent ability to mask their struggles by employing clever coping mechanisms and compensation strategies. Dyscalculia is a brain-based learning difference that affects many areas beyond arithmetic, but calculation and number fluency tend to get most of the focus since those skills are vital to school success. Since this is a brain-based difference (meaning there are certain regions of the brain that operate differently from a non-dyscalculic person), we know that there is nothing you did that made your child dyscalculic, it isn’t something that developed over time, and it also isn’t something that can be cured. We can, however, help your child develop the tools and strategies to thrive.
